Editor's Verdict:

GuitarHotShot is a video and e-book based guitar tuition course which promises to teach you how to play complex solos and songs within weeks. It can be purchased online and you get instant access through a special members' area of the web site.

This course is another that fits into the category of "all sales pitch and no substance" which a number of the products we have reviewed in the learn guitar section seem to be. The web site follows the standard formula of making wild claims that you can become a guitar professional in a few weeks and following them up with most likely made up testimonies from 'fans' of the course. Our favourite line is: "The system uses cutting edge grid based technology", or in non- sales pitch speak - standard guitar tablature.

What you actually get for your money from GuitarHotShots is a set of poorly produced video lessons supplemented by poorly written e-book lessons. Also included are some chord charts and guitar tablature, which can come in handy but is nothing you couldn't find elsewhere. To its credit the course does take you through some advanced techniques such as two handed tapping, but it seems to get there far too quickly for a beginner to learn.

GuitarHotShot claims to cover a large variety of styles from funk to rock to country; in reality there are some included riffs that cover these styles, but no teaching as to how the riff relates to the style or why it should be the way it is. However, it does take you through the basics of reading guitar tablature and music notation which serve as a foundation for being able to play in any style.

In case it's not already obvious, we don't think very much of the GuitarHotShot course. It makes too many wild claims and doesn't back them up with any substance. At $29.95 it won't break the bank, but we reckon your money would be better spent on a good quality book rather than this hastily thrown together course.
